What is surgical exposure of impacted teeth with laser?

Surgical exposure is a small, precise procedure that uncovers a permanent tooth that is stuck under the gum so it can move into its proper place. Using a dental laser, we gently reveal the tooth with minimal bleeding, no stitches in most cases, and a much faster recovery than traditional surgery.

When your child might need it

  • An impacted canine, premolar, or front tooth visible only on X-ray
  • A delay of more than 6 months past the expected eruption time
  • Orthodontic treatment that requires bonding a bracket to a hidden tooth
  • A baby tooth that hasn't fallen out because the adult tooth is blocked

How it works

  • The area is fully numbed with kid-friendly anesthetic
  • The laser carefully removes the small flap of gum covering the tooth
  • An orthodontic bracket and chain may be bonded right away if needed
  • The site is sealed by the laser - usually no stitches required

Benefits

  • Minimally invasive with very little bleeding
  • Faster healing and less swelling than scalpel surgery
  • Lower infection risk thanks to laser sterilization
  • Allows orthodontic treatment to move forward smoothly

What to expect

The visit typically takes 30-45 minutes, and your child stays awake and comfortable the whole time. Our team works closely with your orthodontist so everything is coordinated for the smoothest possible journey.

Recovery & aftercare

Mild soreness and slight swelling are normal for 2-3 days and respond well to children's pain relief and a cool compress. A soft diet, gentle salt-water rinses, and careful brushing around the area help healing stay on track.

A note for parents

Your child may feel uneasy about the word "surgery," so we describe the visit as "helping a sleepy tooth wake up." Your calm encouragement and a favorite snack waiting at home make all the difference.
