What is pulp preservation for baby teeth?
Pulp preservation, also called indirect or direct pulp capping, is a minimally invasive technique that protects the living nerve of a baby tooth when decay is deep but the pulp is still healthy. By placing a special biocompatible medicine over the pulp, we help the tooth heal itself and avoid a full pulpotomy.
When your child might need it
- Deep decay that is close to but has not yet reached the nerve
- A small pulp exposure from trauma or a cavity
- Mild sensitivity without spontaneous pain
- A young tooth where keeping the pulp alive is especially important
How it works
- The tooth is gently numbed with flavored topical and local anesthetic
- Decay is carefully removed, leaving a thin protective layer near the pulp
- A bioactive material such as MTA or Biodentine is placed over the area
- The tooth is sealed with a tooth-colored filling or crown
Benefits
- Keeps the natural nerve alive and healthy
- Less invasive than a full pulpotomy
- Allows the tooth to continue developing normally
- Reduces the chance of future infection
What to expect
The visit typically lasts 30-45 minutes and is comfortable from start to finish. We use the "tell-show-do" approach and offer headphones or a tablet so your child stays relaxed and distracted.
Recovery & aftercare
Your child may feel mild sensitivity to cold for a few days, which usually settles on its own. Stick to soft, lukewarm foods for the first day and continue gentle brushing twice daily.
A note for parents
Let your child know they're being a brave helper, not a patient - kids respond beautifully to positive framing. Your warm presence in the room is often all the comfort they need.
