What is cavity prevention with SDF?
SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) is a liquid medicine that stops cavities from growing without any drilling, needles, or noise. It's a wonderful option for very young children, anxious kids, or hard-to-reach baby teeth, and the application takes less than a minute per tooth.
When your child might need it
- Early-stage cavities in toddlers and preschoolers
- Children too young or anxious for traditional fillings
- Cavities in baby teeth that will fall out within a few years
- Special-needs kids who benefit from a quick, gentle option
How it works
- The tooth is dried with a soft cotton swab
- A tiny brush paints SDF directly onto the cavity
- The medicine is left to absorb for about a minute
- The area is rinsed and your child is free to go
Benefits
- No drilling, no needles, no pain
- Stops cavities from getting worse in seconds
- Strengthens enamel and kills decay-causing bacteria
- Great for kids who aren't ready for longer procedures
What to expect
The whole visit is typically under 15 minutes and completely needle-free. The treated cavity will turn dark, which is a sign the SDF is working - this only happens on the decayed area, not on healthy enamel.
Recovery & aftercare
There is no recovery time - your child can eat and drink right away. We usually recheck the tooth in 2-4 weeks and may reapply SDF every 6 months to keep decay under control.
A note for parents
The dark spot is a small trade-off for a pain-free, fear-free experience, and on baby molars it's rarely visible. If your child is nervous about dental visits, SDF can be a turning point that builds lasting confidence.
